“The Italian Concerto BWV 971…by no means be regarded literally as a “piano exercise”. Rather than that, the individual works in the four parts of this collection probe the characters of different genres and styles, which demand a high degree of mental, musical and technical ability on the part of the performing musicians…As the harpsichord does not permit a wide range of dynamics, the dynamics markings in the Italian Concerto have to be understood as indications of the distinctive tone of the double manual harpsichord rather than as dynamic directions proper. For that reason it seems only natural to play this composition on two string instruments of different pitch and tone.”
