In this post, I’ll explain how to create smooth, natural fish-like motion in Houdini using the MPM (Material Point Method) solver and VEX. The MPM solver is great for simulating materials that behave like both solids and fluids, making it perfect for mimicking a fish’s swimming motion. We use VEX code to control attributes like stiffness (E), density, and Poisson’s ratio (nu) to make the fish’s movements feel realistic. The fish moves using a wave-like pattern, controlled by parameters like swim speed and wave frequency. As it moves, the physical properties of the fish, like how rigid or dense it is, change over time, making the simulation even more lifelike. By adding some randomness based on nearby points, the motion becomes more dynamic and natural. This method allows you to create smooth, controllable fish movements in your MPM simulations, with flexible settings to adjust the behavior as needed.
