There has always been an element of drama, even of opera, in Capital. The dramatis personae include not just buyers and sellers, workers and capitalists, classical and vulgar economists, but also capital itself, cast as a vampire. This is so particularly at key turns in Marx's argument such as when he demonstrates that surplus value is not made in the 'noisy sphere of the market' but in the 'hidden abode of production. Matters hinge around the value of labour and its use value, around the emergence of surplus despite the exchange of equivalents and around the freedoms of markets and the authoritarianism of the workplace.
