Riding the Brindabellas from Tumut

There are a few reasons why we chose to head home via The Brindabellas. Besides the fact that it’s an interesting gravel-road route, there are also some magnificent bitumen twisties on each side of the gravel, and in perfect condition.

Bombowlee and Brindabella roads share a perfect surface through a pine forest area, and both feature great sweepers and twisties. After a little over 40km, the Brindabella Rd becomes an undulating, twisty, gravel road and passes through a range of sceneries to keep things interesting. Plenty of cows and kangaroos found their way onto the road to add to the adventure.
Descending on the final gravel section was much easier this time as it has been heavily graded since our last ride there. Approaching Uriarra, the bitumen starts and the twisties begin — perfect surface winding down towards the village where Brindabella Rd turns onto a totally resealed marvel — however, the speed limit has been lowered to 60km/h. This is the magnificent section of twisties to Cotter Dam, that the Canberra riders cut laps on, similar to the Sydney folk that sit on the Old Pac.

After a brief stop at the scenic Cotter Dam area, we continued on Paddy’s River Road which has some wear, but is still a lovely ride. We fuelled at Jerrabomberra and scooted around Queanbeyan, had lunch at Bungendore and cut across the easy-riding gravel, Lumley Road, which skirts around The Morass (whose water was a rich blue colour) and takes you to Bungonia.

Our final stop was Coffee at Bundanoon, and then we had a good run down Macquarie Pass, which capped off a fantastic 4-days riding. We were so happy to share this ride with ‘Whitey’, who basically christened his brand-new GSA.
