The SL BAN-ETSU MONOGATARI runs 111 km from Niitsu to Aizu-Wakamatsu on the Ban-Etsu Nishi Line (nicknamed the "Forest, Water, and Romance Railway"), stopping at nine stations on the way up (toward Aizu-Wakamatsu) and eight stations on the way down (toward Niitsu).
Since April 29, 1999, the SL Banetsu Monogatari (C57-180) has been in regular service on the Ban-Etsu Nishi Line.SL Ban-Etsu Monogatari (SL Ban-Etsu Story) is a temporary rapid train operated by East Japan Railway (JR East) on the Shinetsu Main Line between Niitsu Station and Aizu Wakamatsu Station.The name of the train was "SL BAN-ETSU MONOGatari-go" at the beginning of its operation, but the official name was changed to "SL BAN-ETSU MONOGatari" in 2008 according to the headmark. The carriages modified for this train are also sometimes called "Banetsu Monogatari".
