10-DEC-1984 0300L North of Murmansk

We just left Murmansk for our 24th war patrol in our "new to us" Shchuka-B class sub Bratsk (K-391), what NATO calls the Akula-class.

Priority Mission: Stop NATO Reforger convoy from St. Lawrence Bay to Portsmouth

We rushed west, through the GIUK gap, and lined up at the St. Lawrence Bay approach... when we're told we missed our target. ARGH!

Priority Mission: NATO sub plan to go by North Cape to enter polar region. Stop it.

We tried to rush back into Norwegian sea, but as we approached the GIUK gap, we were intercepted twice by NATO ASW units. We simply outran them before they can react.

We waited at where Greenland Sea, Norwegian Sea, and Barents Sea meet, when our maritime patrol Bears spotted something coming east. We moved northwest to intercept it in the Greenland Sea.

14-DEC-1984 1600L Between Jan Mayen and Longyearbyen

We quickly found the Yankee Sturgeon-class SSN to our west. It is relatively close, but Yankee subs are notoriously fast and maneuverable. Still, Sturgeon-class is an older sub limited to 26-28 kt. We will do the usual: Vodopad to keep it dodging, then launch a TEST-71 to pincer it. And it worked exactly as planned, except it took both torpedoes to sink her. GLAVCOM was pleased.

Priority Mission: NATO CVBG leaving Portsmouth for patrol in Eastern Norwegian Sea. Stop it.

We dashed south and setup near Bergen, trying to catch anything coming north. We spotted the CVBG, but it was following the Norwegian shore so closely we barely got ahead of it and intercepted it near Lofoten Islands.

We found no less than 5 escorts around Nimitz this time, Knox, Type 42, Perry, County and Spruance. Plus 2 helos, but they were no factor. And luckily, they're coming straight for us. We started launching torpedoes when Nimitz reached 10km, plus a few decoys. Perry jinked east, County, Type 42, and Knox ran south, and Spruance, in the back, charged forward. One of the 65-76s hit Nimitz, slowing her to 20 kt. I had to release the 2 TEST-71Ms to dodge an incoming torp, but they caught the Perry and sank her. Spruance jinked but kept coming, and Knox turned back and charged. As Nimitz settled on escape vector, I launched 2 65-76 to chase her down, and they did, sinking her many minutes later.

Spruance and Knox and I danced and traded torpedoes, but eventually they were caught by a combination of TEST-71 and USET-80 torpedoes. But I was caught launching a decoy at too high a speed and suffered a jammed torpedo tube. Type 42 and County tried to turn back to hunt me, but they were too far, and I disengaged.

GLAVCOM was extremely happy that we bagged another Nimitz-class, but also handed us another mission.

Priority Mission: Stop NATO sub carrying commandos to land at Andoya.

We're going home first. We need reloads and repair the tube.

16-DEC-1984 1000L Murmansk

No band and no admiral's greeting this time, but the crew was happy nonetheless. I approved a quick 24 hour leave for the crew while the yard crew worked on the jammed torpedo tube... It'd take at least 14 hours. Then we can load more torpedoes. We'll be ready to go back out soon.

And thus ended the 24th war patrol of Kapitan Changov. The adventure will continue in the next episode!

This will be my third attempt at the Soviet campaign. The year is 1984. After too many Yankee provocations, the Soviet Union had enough and declared war. The Soviet Army can take Europe, if the Soviet Navy can stop or at least slow the reinforcements reaching continental Europe from the US. And as a captain of a Soviet submarine, I will do my duty to the Motherland.
