On June 17, 2025, I rode the legendary Dragon Slayer—Route 160 from Appalachia, VA to Lynch, KY. This is Appalachia’s answer to the Tail of the Dragon: fewer crowds, just as much thrill, and scenery that’s every bit as dramatic. With a good road surface, great weather, and barely any traffic, it delivered everything I hoped for.

I took it slow, savoring the tight twisties, the rugged Appalachian landscape, and the deep history between two towns shaped by coal, rail, and hard work.

Watch as an adorable, baby black bear darted into the road. A fellow rider warned me about a speed trap across from the Backroads of Appalachia Welcome Center. A pickup driver kindly let me pass. Days like this—perfect weather, light traffic, and pure riding joy—don’t come often. I’m grateful this one did.
