Ah, the Strait of Hormuz. This tiny, tight little passage (that's what she said, anyway) has been the talk of the world for months. Iran had closed the strait as soon as the US started bombing them--it led to oil price shocks around the world, everywhere from Italy to Kenya to Japan.

But I wondered...what was it like in the places along the Strait? Who lived there? Officially, the Strait of Hormuz is shared between two countries: Iran and Oman. Being that I was American, I didn't think it was a good idea to go to Iran at this time. But Oman was open to everyone, and so I decided to rent a car in Dubai and drive over to the Musandam peninsula.

What I found was completely unexpected: an isolated village that speaks a rare language, all with a front row view of Iran and the Strait.

In the weeks just before Trump and Iran signed their latest ceasefire, I took a trip to this most infamous body of water. It didn't go perfectly. This is the record of my journey.
