The Indian Navy is expecting to receive the Ministry of Defence's approval later this year for the procurement of 12 to 18 N-LCA Mk1 trainer aircraft, a move that will finally address a long-standing gap in carrier-based pilot training. According to sources who spoke to idrw.org, the aircraft are expected to start joining the Navy from 2029 onwards, around the same time when Rafale M fighter jets begin entering service.
At present, the Navy does not operate a dedicated two-seat carrier-capable trainer that can take off and land from aircraft carriers. This has forced rookie naval aviators to transition directly from Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers to frontline fighter squadrons, a leap that is considered far from ideal in modern naval aviation.
