Can you use VLANs with an unmanaged switch?

In this video, I'll show you a practical method to pass tagged VLAN traffic through an unmanaged switch and connect a Windows PC/Laptop to a specific VLAN.

In this setup, I'm using:

🔹 Grandstream GWN7001 Router
🔹 D-Link Unmanaged Switch
🔹 2 Windows Laptops
🔹 VLAN 1 – Default VLAN
🔹 VLAN 10
🔹 VLAN 20
🔹 DHCP enabled for all VLANs

🔧 What you'll see in this video

First, we configure a laptop with a static IP from VLAN 10 and test connectivity.

The laptop initially cannot reach the VLAN gateway or DNS because the required VLAN tagging is not being applied by the laptop.

Then, we check the GWN7001 LAN configuration and verify that:

✔ VLAN 1 is configured as the default/PVID
✔ VLAN 10 and VLAN 20 are configured on the router
✔ DHCP is enabled for the VLANs
✔ The LAN ports allow the required VLANs

Finally, I'll show how to configure the VLAN ID directly on the laptop's Ethernet adapter:

Network Settings → Ethernet → Adapter Properties → Configure → Advanced → VLAN ID

For example:

➡ VLAN ID 10 → Laptop receives an IP from VLAN 10
➡ VLAN ID 20 → Laptop receives an IP from VLAN 20

After applying the VLAN ID, the laptop is able to communicate with the VLAN gateway, resolve DNS, and access the Internet.

💡 Important concept

An unmanaged switch does not provide VLAN configuration like a managed switch. In this scenario, the VLAN tag is configured at the PC/Laptop network adapter, allowing the tagged traffic to pass through the unmanaged switch to the router.

This can be useful in certain small-office or testing scenarios where a managed switch is not available.

⚠️ Note: VLAN tagging support and the exact VLAN setting can depend on the network adapter/NIC driver. Some Windows adapters may not expose a VLAN ID option.
