Origins at Govardhan Hill
In 1409 CE, villagers near Govardhan noticed a cow from Krishna’s herd climbing the hill daily and offering her milk at a mysterious black stone protruding from the mountain.
This stone was revealed to be the divine arm of Shreenathji, Krishna in his child form, raising Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Braj.
Devotees began worshipping this manifestation, and over time, the full idol of Shreenathji emerged from the hill.
Vallabhacharya and the Pushtimarg Tradition
In the 15th century, the great saint Vallabhacharya recognized Shreenathji as the supreme deity and established the Pushtimarg sect, centered on loving devotion (bhakti) to Krishna.
Shreenathji became the heart of this tradition, worshipped with music, dance, and offerings of food (bhog).
Journey to Nathdwara
In the 17th century, during Mughal rule, the idol was moved from Govardhan to protect it from destruction.
While being transported to Mewar, the cart carrying Shreenathji’s idol got stuck at Nathdwara. Devotees took this as divine will, and Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar built the temple there in 1672 CE.
Since then, Nathdwara has been the permanent home of Shreenathji.
Temple Traditions
The temple follows haveli-style architecture, resembling a royal residence rather than a typical temple.
Worship is performed as if Shreenathji is a living child — with daily routines of waking, dressing, meals, music, and rest.
Festivals like Janmashtami, Holi, and Annakut are celebrated with grandeur, attracting thousands of devotees.
