The Wolf Spider is one of the most common spider species in the world. They get their name from their hunting behavior. Rather than use a web to trap insects, they stalk and hunt their prey, sometimes chasing them down with blinding speed.

The wolf spider can be found throughout the world on every continent but Antarctica. They are found throughout the United States from border to border and coast to coast.

Wolf spiders are sometimes mistaken for tarantulas because of their large and hairy bodies. They range in size from a quarter of an inch to two inches long. They also range in color from tannish-orange to gray and black. They typically have spots or stripes on their bodies to help camouflage them. Because of this, they can easily blend into their environment, going unnoticed by you or larger predators.

Wolf spiders are typically found in open grassy areas like yards, fields or pastures. They do not spin webs, but instead nest in burrows in the ground. They can also be found under yard debris, leaf litter, in mulch and flower beds, around shrubbery, or in or around firewood.

They can also be found indoors, usually coming in to hunt other insects or, most commonly, to avoid colder temperatures in Fall and Winter months. They will typically be found around windows, doors, in closets, garages, or basements.


To get control of wolf spiders, start outside with exclusionary measures. Be sure to seal any voids or entry points to your home. You can use caulk or a mesh product like Stuf-Fit. Stuf-Fit is a flexible and versatile copper mesh that is resistant to corrosion from various elements. Stuff it into voids and other openings around your home. This is an excellent method to exclude spiders, rodents, and other insects from entering your home. Also be sure to clean up and remove any yard debris or clutter.

Next, use Bifen LP insecticide granules in the yard. This is a powerful granular insecticide that offers a quick knockdown and a two to four month long residual. You can use this with either a hand spreader or push spreader. Spread the Bifen around your lawn, and flower beds or mulch areas.

After that, activate the Bifen granules by spraying Reclaim IT over your yard. Reclaim IT is a liquid concentrate that will not only activate the granules, but also work with the granules to create a deadly one-two punch for spiders and other insects, and it offers a ninety day residual. Broadcast Reclaim IT over your yard with hose-end sprayer. Also use this with a pump sprayer and spray flower and mulch beds, entry points, and the siding of the structure to create a deadly barrier.

Inside, use the Reclaim IT and pump sprayer and spray along baseboards, in garages, around windows, around doors, under and around appliances, or any voids the spiders might be entering. Be sure to spray with low pressure to avoid splash.

Also use Catchmaster glue boards to trap hard to find spiders. This is a board with a sticky surface that will trap the spiders and other crawling pests. The wolf spider will walk across the board and get stuck, and can then be disposed of. Place these in garages, closets, and storage areas. You can also use a product like Pyrid aerosol for quick contact kills.

Finally, prevent wolf spiders from returning by keeping your home and yard clutter free. Check that any entry points are still sealed. And be sure to perform regular insecticidal treatments.
