Software assurance (SwA)—implementing software with a “level of confidence that software functions as intended and is free of vulnerabilities, either intentionally or unintentionally designed or inserted as part of the software, throughout the lifecycle”1—has
been legislatively mandated for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). This worthy goal needs to be translated into practical actions that designers and developers can execute and the DoD can validate. We have identified two critical research tasks to further DoD capabilities in addressing SwA across the software lifecycle.
