Case Study 188: Addison’s Disease
This rare endocrine disorder occurs when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough cortisol and aldosterone. Patients often present with fatigue, weight loss, low blood pressure, salt cravings, and even skin hyperpigmentation, especially in the creases of the hands or inside the mouth. It’s often misdiagnosed until a crisis hits.
Diagnosis involves checking ACTH and cortisol levels, followed by an ACTH stimulation test. Treatment includes lifelong hormone replacement with hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone.
