Sir Keir Starmer says "hanging onto Trump's latest words is not the special relationship in action" after Trump's latest attack on the prime minister over his response to the war in Iran.
Starmer was asked during Prime Minister's Questions if his "dithering and equivocal response" to events in the Middle East had improved the relationship with the US.
"American planes are operating out of British bases. That is the special relationship in action... Hanging on to President Trump's latest words is not the special relationship in action," the PM told the Commons.
He said the crisis in the Middle East required a “cool head” as he defended his response to the situation and that his priority was the safety of the British people.
Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday during a visit from the German Chancellor, President Trump said he is “not happy” with the UK and with Starmer, and that “this is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with”.
