The guitar is probably the most popular instrument to learn on the planet - alongside the piano and keyboard. (And perhaps, singing!) (And drums!!) (And...!!!)
But it can be a difficult instrument to replicate on a keyboard, but with a few hints and tips you can start to make your keyboard playing more guitar-like.
Start by thinking like a guitarist! First of all imagine yourself holding the instrument and tuning it - it usually has 6-strings and the lowest note is E, one and half octaves below middle C. There are also different types of guitar - acoustic, semi-acoustic, solid body - and each use different types of strings, sometimes with FX (effects) or "stomp boxes" to shape the sound in a particular way. Guitarists try to create a unique, signature tone, so they stand out from the crowd.
Because there are only 6 strings, chords can only be a maximum of 6 notes, and these are usually spaced out - find a guitar book to see which notes they are. In addition, there are different ways to play the notes - strumming is the most popular, but you can also play break the chords into single note arpeggios.
In this video, I start by talking about the different types of guitars, the sound they make, and how to play your keyboard to create a guitar patterns. In the second half of the video, there's a step-by-step example of creating a RHYTHM on the CT-X which can then be used in songs and instrumental pieces.
All the best - enjoy playing your keyboard like a guitar!
