This concert was given on 11/11/2023 as part of the Arts&Resistance Theme Semester at the University of Michigan's East Quad Keene Theater in the Fall of 2023. Funding for the program was provided by the UM Residential College and the Arts Initiative.

Composing music with a nationalistic core at a time of great political upheaval, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Kuula were at the foreground of the first generation of significant Finnish-speaking composers, coming of age and making culturally important Finnish art music during the periods of Russification: 1899-1905 and from 1908 until Finnish Independence in 1917.
