Grace Nono is one of the Philippines’ most renowned female vocalists. She is known for her musical style based on traditional Filipino rhythms. In Rainforest World Music Festival, Nono was voicing the Ancestral Sacred, which she claims as the revitalizes oral and aural traditional performances of the precolonial Philippines. Her music sounds a little foreign but at the same time it feels familiar for me. Meanwhile, for Nono itself and the ensemble, singing these chants is their contribution to the collective prayer for peace and the survival of the indigenous lands and peoples of the Philippines.
Grace Nono is also an ethnomusicologist, scholar of Philippine shamanism, and cultural worker.
