With my final night in Lahore upon me, I was ready to go out with a bang! Come along with me as I go on one last street food tour in Lahore, Pakistan, where I tried bun plaster, spicy chow mein, and more!
I’d be diving into several dishes I hadn’t tried yet, so I was super excited! My guides Rashid and Adeel from Manaky, and my local guide Adil, and I, started with some delicious and creamy malai chai from a 40-year-old stand called Iqbal Tea Store.

The chai was super thick and chunky on top, and very hot! We dipped a bit of bread into it like I do in Miami. The bread was nice and buttery and went well with the creamy chai.
The chai helped me wake up for our food tour! After a quick drive, we made it to Hameed Bun Plaster, a local burger shop. They sell shami kababs, which are lentil fritters.
They also offer bun plaster, which are basically fried egg sandwiches cooked on a grill with a shami kabab, lots of butter, salt, and pepper. They even have French toast!
I’m a big fan of egg sandwiches, and this one was so good! I loved the fluffy bun, the butter, and the pepper and salt. The soft shami kabab was incredible, too. It was one of my favorite dishes in the city!
From there, we headed to Xa-Owng Chinese Restaurant to get some chow mein. They also offer soups and have an outdoor dining area. To make the chow mein, the cook throws red onions, cabbage, water, chicken, Manchurian sauce, and noodles into a wok.
The noodles were thick and extremely fresh and tasty. I liked the spice from the black pepper and the sweet-and-sour Manchurian sauce as well. The crunch from the onions and cabbage was fantastic as well.
It reminded me of noodle dishes I’d eaten in China, but these were much spicier! It had my mouth on fire, but it was so good!
Finally, for our last stop, we headed to Dera Restaurant. I was stuffed, but I couldn’t not go all-out on my last night in Pakistan! The restaurant had a nice outdoor terrace and even live musicians playing flutes and drums.
The seating area was nice and relaxing—you could actually lay back and chill out. Around us were lots of cooks making everything from chargha to taka-tak and grilled meat.
We ordered lamb rice, mutton karahi, and three types of naan: plain, flaxseed, and garlic. You use the naan and eat the karahi right out of the pan, which is called a karahi.
The mutton karahi was tender, oily, and ful of flavor. It wasn’t very hot and tasted outstanding!
Meanwhile the lamb in the rice was extremely juicy and paired nicely with the yellow rice, which contained raisins. We also had some raita, which contained almost no herbs, but was still super tasty.
But my favorite was the karahi. It wasn’t my favorite karahi of the trip—the rooster karahi I ate the previous night takes the cake on that. But it was still phenomenal!
After eating, I was so stuffed, I had to lay back and relax! What an amazing way to end my trip through Pakistan.
