Introduction
• Context: Judgment completed, evil defeated, death destroyed (Rev. 19–20)
• We now arrive at the eternal state — the new heaven and the new earth
• Key verse: Revelation 21:5
“Behold, I make all things new… these words are true and faithful”
• This is not speculation or symbolism — this is God’s revealed future
• Heaven is the place Jesus prepared for His people (John 14:1–3)
Why Being Heavenly Minded Matters
• Purifies us — 1 John 3:2–3
• Comforts us — 1 Thessalonians 4:18
• Motivates us — 1 Corinthians 15:58
• Heavenly hope produces earthly faithfulness
Five Realities of Heaven
1. Heaven Requires Destruction (v. 1)
• “The first heaven and the first earth had passed away”
• This creation is temporary
◦ Matthew 24:35
◦ Hebrews 1:10–12
• The universe is held together by Christ (Colossians 1:16–17)
• God will dissolve the old to make way for the new
◦ 2 Peter 3:7, 10–13
• Destruction is necessary so righteousness can dwell fully
2. Heaven Will Be a Fresh Design (vv. 1–2, 5)
• Repetition of new:
◦ New heaven
◦ New earth
◦ New Jerusalem
• “New” = new in quality, not merely in sequence
• God is not remodeling — He is creating
◦ Isaiah 65:17
◦ Genesis 1 (bara — creation from nothing)
• Nothing decays, wears out, or grows old
3. Heaven Will Operate Differently (v. 1)
• “There was no more sea”
• Scripture often associates the sea with:
◦ Chaos
◦ Danger
◦ Separation
• Heaven will have:
◦ No chaos
◦ No instability
◦ No threat
• Just as believers receive glorified bodies, creation itself will function differently
4. Heaven Will Be God-Centered and Unfamiliar (vv. 3–6)
• The defining reality of heaven:
◦ God dwelling with His people (v. 3)
• No distance, no veil, no limitation
• Heaven described by what is absent (v. 4):
◦ No tears
◦ No death
◦ No sorrow
◦ No pain
• “It is done!” — God’s redemptive plan fully complete (v. 6)
• God Himself becomes the eternal source of satisfaction
5. Heaven Will Not Be for Everyone (vv. 7–8)
• Heaven is an inheritance for the overcomer
• The contrast:
◦ Those who trust Christ vs. those who refuse Him
• This list describes unrepentant unbelief, not occasional failure
• Heaven is not for the sincere — it is for the saved
• Who is the overcomer?
◦ 1 John 5:4–5 — those born of God through faith in Christ
◦ John 14:6 — Jesus alone is the way
Final Truth
• Heaven is real — and so is judgment
• Jesus is the difference
• For the believer:
The best is not behind you — it’s ahead of you
