Today we're talking about phrasing in Maqam, starting from the basics. Being more melodic-based than harmonic, Maqam music employs many unwritten rules and "limitations" the musician must take on himself in order to present the Seyir properly, or in other words stick to the melodic progression. If we understand these rules and use them correctly it can give a lot of direction to our Taqsim/compositions, without getting lost playing scales up and down and pursuing unrelated ideas.
