But in Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, a national leader in orthopaedics, particularly in spine surgery, doctors may say otherwise.

Doctor Chen cited his case of the world’s first surgery on a patient with complete head–body separation, noting that such rare cases lack large datasets and highlight AI’s limits. He stresses that AI’s role today is not to replace surgeons, but to assist them.

At Shanghai East Hospital, a homegrown medical AI can instantly analyze tens of thousands of diseases and give doctors rapid diagnostic support.

A recent survey by Life Times, a well-known Chinese public health media outlet, of 500 physicians at China’s top-tier hospitals found that over 70% would recommend AI doctor services for everyday health questions and routine care.
