Born and raised in St. Pete, Maria Scruggs has spent decades serving her community through leadership, public service, and advocacy. From making history as the first African American Homecoming Queen at Northeast High School to building a career in law enforcement and criminal justice administration, Maria’s story is deeply rooted in the city she now hopes to lead.

Currently serving as a Jail Administrator overseeing major pretrial and community corrections programs, Maria has spent nearly two decades commuting to Orlando while continuing to invest her time and energy back into the St. Petersburg community. She is also the founder of the Phyllis Wheatley Rise to Read Campaign, an initiative focused on tackling literacy challenges in Pinellas County and ensuring that every child in St. Petersburg has the opportunity to read at grade level.

Throughout her career, Maria has led major community initiatives — from youth programs in Childs Park to health awareness campaigns that have helped save lives through breast cancer education. Her leadership has touched education, civil rights advocacy, public health, and neighborhood development.

On this episode of The Rotation, we’ll talk with Maria about her vision for St. Petersburg, the challenges facing the city, her decades of community leadership, and what she believes the future of local leadership should look like.
