A Battery Powered Rocket Engine? Rocket Lab's Rutherford Engine

Описание: Has Rocket Lab created a battery powered rocket engine? Rocket Lab's Rutherford Engine uses a lithium battery to help power an electric motor. This electric motor drives propellant pumps, which throw the mass quantities of propellant into the combustion chamber necessary for liftoff.

This electric pump fed engine design differs from conventional gas generator cycles, used in engines such as the RS-25 and SpaceX Merlin.

Increasing battery energy density and the smaller, lighter Electron rocket enabled this technology to be used on an orbital class rocket engine for the first time ever.

This innovative electric motor and battery design decreased the complexity and manufacturing time of the Rutherford rocket engine. Additionally, the design didn't significantly increase the cost of each engine and doesn't prevent reuse of the engine after flight.
