A team of astronomers studied GW Orionis, a triple star system with an unusual inner region, using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), the VLT Interferometer, and ALMA, in which ESO is a partner. The three stars at the centre of GW Orionis have warped the disc, in contrast to the flat planet-forming discs we observe around many stars. The tilted ring that was torn away from the warped disc can be seen in exquisite detail thanks to this animation. The team's computer model of GW Orionis' inner region served as the basis for the animation; using observational data, they were able to reconstruct the stars' three-dimensional orbits and the disc's three-dimensional shape.

Based on observations that have for the first time shown a three dimensional view of the distribution of the expelled material, this artist's depiction of the material around a recently exploded star known as Supernova 1987A (or SN 1987A) was created. Astronomers made the observations using the ESO's Very Large Telescope. The new findings show that the initial explosion was not only powerful. Additionally, it was more focused in one particular direction. This strongly suggests that the supernova must have been extremely turbulent, which is consistent with the most recent computer simulations. This video displays the various components of SN 1987A, including the deformed innermost expelled material, one inner ring, and two outer rings.

Although the exact mechanism of a supernova explosion is not well understood, the manner in which the star exploded is visible in this inner material. The astronomers came to the conclusion that this material did not eject symmetrically in all directions, but rather that it appeared to have a preferred direction. Additionally, the direction is not what was predicted based on the placement of the rings.

An animation of a micronova explosion can be seen in this video. Material, primarily hydrogen, taken from its companion star makes up the blue disc whirling around the bright white dwarf in the image's centre. The white dwarf directs the hydrogen toward its poles toward the centre of the disc using strong magnetic fields. The magnetic fields at one of the white dwarf's poles contain a micronova explosion as it is caused by the material falling on the star's hot surface.

Imagination of a galaxy forming stars within strong outflows of matter blasted out from its core by supermassive black holes. The first confirmed observations of stars forming in this kind of harsh environment come from the ESO Very Large Telescope. The discovery has numerous ramifications for comprehending the characteristics and evolution of galaxies.
