This leg of our trip was pretty much like the previous - we had awesome calm, sunny peaceful days and then there were days we hope to forget. The squally stormy days were not quite as bad as we had experienced at the start of the trip but they were horrible enough! 🌧🌊
We had engine failures, propeller issues and solar issues but we made it through with an equal amount of beautiful memory making days.
We had a visit from a beautiful seabird - the jury is still out, we think he was a red footed booby but we aren’t sure - we called him Bernard and he stayed with us for 100’s of miles through squall and sunshine. We were sad to see him go as we approached Fernando de Noronha.
The trip from St Helena to Fernando was quite uneventful into the night before getting to Fernando - we were trying to slow down to only approach the anchorage in daylight but with the storm that rolled in, we overshot the island and had to fight our way back the following morning. We were safely anchored by 3.30pm just in time to make it to the harbour master to check in. The clearing in process was easy in quick. We had decided to only spend the night in Fernando and get straight back to the ocean to cross to Cabedelo. We were exhausted and wanted to get settled somewhere we knew we would really be able to relax.
Leaving Fernando de Noronha the next morning to what seemed to be perfect weather predictions soon proved to be nothing but. The swell, wind direction and current seemed to be pretty much opposite to what was predicted. Something chord by probably every sailor we have spoken to since getting here. They all experienced the same conditions.
What we weren’t expecting was the squalls that were to become a way of life for the next few days.

Now safely in Cabedelo, Brazil, it is still almost surreal to think of the distance we have sailed - 3501nm to be exact, and to know that we are sitting on another continent around the other side of the world to home in South Africa.
