If understated luxury is your thing, then Audi’s biggest sedan is worth a look. Subdued on the outside and exquisitely upscale inside the cabin, the A8 and S8 are among the best options for those who appreciate stealth wealth. The German automaker last overhauled its flagship luxury sedan for the 2022 model year, so we aren’t surprised to see that changes for 2025 are minor. Rivals include other opulent four-doors such as the BMW 7 Series, Genesis G90, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

What We Think

Sometimes anonymity is exactly what you want. The Audi A8 L is a long-wheelbase luxury sedan with styling that blends in with the rest of Audi’s lineup—and most traffic on the road, for that matter. However, where the A8 really shines is inside the cabin. Supple seats and high-quality materials make for a lovely interior.

The A8 L isn’t exciting to drive, instead providing a supple ride that mutes the outside world’s unpleasantness. We wish the standard sedan was equipped with a V-8 engine, but the turbocharged V-6 engine has ample grunt to scoot the A8 off the line. Rather than performance hardware, Audi plies its flagship sedan with a total of three screens, one for the driver display as well as two central touchscreens for infotainment and car control functions. Although we wish the A8 came with more adaptive driver assistance features as standard, its relatively low starting price for the segment gives shoppers some wiggle room to outfit more tech by way of the numerous packages on offer.

Those desiring more power and driver engagement can step up to the S8, which packs a powerful twin-turbocharged V-8 engine and an arsenal of suspension, steering, and braking upgrades. Despite these enhancements, the S8 doesn’t give up comfort, especially after Audi made its extended leather package standard for 2025.

Audi’s flagship luxury sedan deserves praise for its focus on comfort and high-tech appointments, creating an extraordinary chauffeur experience. Those hoping to spend more time behind the wheel than in the back seat should step up to the S8 or consider other options in the segment that place greater priority on driving dynamics.
