Breaking...13 Coal Miners Trapped in Assam’s Umrangso Mine; Rescue Operations Await Confirmation
Haflong,January,6: Thirteen coal miners are reportedly stranded in a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district since early Monday morning. The incident occurred at coal mine No. 19 in Tin Kilo, under the Umrangso police station, according to local sources.
Initially, 27 miners were believed to be trapped. While 10 managed to escape, between 13 to 17 miners remain unaccounted for. Official confirmation of the incident is pending, as stated by a District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) official.
“We have been informed about labourers being trapped in the mine, but the report is yet to be verified. Our Deputy Commissioner is on-site, and if confirmed, rescue operations will begin immediately,” the official said.
The mine is alleged to be operating illegally without safety barricades, as revealed by video footage shared with authorities. Locals claim the mine operates under the protection of local politicians and police, with no precautionary measures in place.
One distressed family member expressed their anguish: “I came here after hearing from my daughter that her husband is trapped in the mine. I don’t know how many are inside, but I know he is among them.”
The absence of safety measures and allegations of illegal operations have raised serious concerns. Authorities are under pressure to act swiftly as public anxiety mounts. Rescue efforts will depend on the confirmation of reports from the site.
