Pressure vessels and pipes often have closed ends, so finite element modeling needs to include the end cap pressure required to obtain correct longitudinal stress. This video illustrates two approaches to including end cap pressure. At the end of a nozzle on a pressure vessel, an extension piece is modeled and is capped by a solid disk. The interior is pressurized, and an end cap pressure is automatically included in the model, causing longitudinal stress in the nozzle. At the open end of the pressure vessel, a negative pressure is applied in order to get the net end force that causes axial stress. Users should consider these approaches to including end cap pressure when required in pipe and pressure vessel models.
