Описание: Brought to you by Zarzaur Law, P.A.: Joe Zarzaur and Dr. Evan Malone answer the question of what the signs and symptoms of a closed head injury (TBI - Traumatic Brain Injury) sustained in a car accident?

Motor vehicle and traffic related accidents are the 3rd leading cause of all TBIs (Traumatic Brain Injury) /closed head injuries.*
200,000 brain injuries per year

Damage to the Skull in a Car Accident -
Damage occurs because the person receives a blow to the head that whips the head forward and back or from side to side (as in a car crash), causing the brain to collide at high velocity with the bony skull in which it is housed. This jarring bruises brain tissue and tears blood vessels, particularly where the inside surface of the skull is rough and uneven; damage occurs at (and sometimes opposite) the point of impact. This disruption in the cellular function or structure is classified as a closed head injury

Types of Closed Head Injuries (as determined by an MRI):
1. Concussion
2. Contusion
3. Diffuse Axonal
4. Coup-Contrecoup

Signs/symptoms of Mild TBI:
Usually brief and temporary - "concussion" - manifests in hours to days following incident

brief loss of consciousness
disorientation and/or confusion
headache
nausea/vomiting
sleep-wake cycle disruption
lack of appetite
nondescript dizziness/ataxia
concentration difficulty
overly sensitive to light/sound
blurred vision
mood swings

Signs/symptoms of Severe TBI:
Persistent and/or permanent - "post-concussive syndrome" +/- permanent neurologic deficit - manifests over days to weeks following incident

prolonged loss of consciousness
persistent or progressive headache
seizure or epileptic activity,
blown pupil (one larger than other)
nasal or ear canal drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (skull fracture)
persistent confusion
inability to wake patient (coma)
peripheral motor weakness or lack of sensation
profound personality change or aggression
change in comprehension and executive function (planning, decision making, organization)
complete loss of a sense (loss of smell, loss of taste, loss of hearing, loss of vision)

If you are experiencing symptoms of a closed head injury, it's critical that you not only see a doctor, but also contact an attorney that is an expert in handling these types of cases.
