South Korea's benchmark KOSPI surged past the symbolic 5-thousand-point milestone for the first time on Thursday, capping a rapid three-month rally from 4,000.
On Thursday the market opened around 4-thousand-9-hundred-80 and rose quickly to pass the 5-thousand mark within just a minute.
The increase aligns with positivity in the chips sector, with the two biggest companies by market cap, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, helping to drive the market upward.
Samsung saw gains of more than 125 percent last year SK hynix saw a 274 percent increase.
Their combined market cap represents nearly 40 percent of the KOSPI.
After passing 3-thousand for the first time in 2021, it stayed in the 2-thousand range for 4 years until the second half of last year.
