Peter “Petey Pumps” Ferrara was one of the most feared yet low-profile figures in the history of the Gambino Crime Family. Starting out in Carlo Gambino’s Brooklyn crew in the 1940s, Ferrara quickly rose through the ranks by handling bootlegging, gasoline rationing scams, and a vast numbers empire that would one day dominate New York.
Ferrara was no ordinary soldier—he was a brutal enforcer, reportedly involved in the 1963 flower shop take down of Alfred “Freddy the Sidge” Santantonio. By the early 1960s, FBI records claimed that Ferrara controlled 75% of the city’s numbers racket. Trusted by Carlo Gambino, and partnered in legitimate fronts with Genovese capo Mike Coppola, Petey Pumps became a capo after the fall of Tommy Rava and Antonio Rizzo.
When Ferrara died in 1969, his protégé Toddo Aurello inherited the crew—later mentoring none other than Sammy “The Bull” Gravano.
Join us as we dig into the shadowy life of one of the mob's quiet executioners—Petey Pumps Ferrara.
