Recalling a century in Sunderland this local heritage video 2 of 4 recalls wartime and peacetime life in Sunderland and the memories that shaped Sunderland Town.
This local heritage video is part 2 of 4 part Sunderland local heritage series, sharing personal recollections and historic moments that defined life in Sunderland across a remarkable century.
The video begins with pride and ceremony as the silver rivet was placed in Wearmouth Bridge by the Duke of York, later King George V1, a moment remembered by many across Sunderland.
From there, memories turn to the Ferry at Hylton, including the much-loved Penny Ferry, along with the smaller shipyards that once lined the River Wear and supported everyday life in Sunderland.
Viewers are taken into the working River Wear, recalling the Foy Boatmen and Pilots navigating the swinging basin at North Dock, an essential part of Sunderland Town industry and identity.
