Delicious & authentic Mangalore-style freshwater fish curry – perfect with rice and packed with coastal flavors
For the curry:
1 kg freshwater fish (approx. 10–12 small fish)
1 medium onion (half chopped, half sliced)
½ inch ginger (half chopped)
A few curry leaves
Salt to taste
To dry roast:
1 tbsp coriander seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp black peppercorns
¼ tsp fenugreek seeds
A pinch of mustard seeds
6–8 Byadgi red chillies
4 short spicy red chillies
To grind:
Roasted spices
5–6 garlic cloves
1 small onion
Lime-sized ball of tamarind
½ tsp turmeric powder
1.5 cups grated coconut
Little water (to grind to a smooth paste)
For tempering (tadka):
2 tbsp coconut oil
½ onion, sliced
A few curry leaves
1. Dry Roast Masala:
In a pan, dry roast coriander seeds, cumin, peppercorns, fenugreek, mustard seeds, and both types of chillies on low heat until aromatic. Let them cool.
2. Make the Masala Paste:
Transfer the roasted spices to a mixer jar. Add garlic, small onion, tamarind, turmeric powder, and coconut. Add a little water and grind to a smooth, thick paste.
3. Prepare the Curry Base:
In a wide-bottomed pot, add the ground masala paste and a little water. Bring it to a gentle boil.
4. Add Aromatics:
Add the sliced onion, chopped ginger, curry leaves, and salt. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes on low to medium heat.
5. Add Fish:
Gently slide in the cleaned fish pieces. Let them simmer for 3–4 minutes on low heat until just cooked. Don’t over-stir to avoid breaking the fish.
6. Tadka (Tempering):
In a separate pan, heat 2 tbsp coconut oil. Add sliced onion and curry leaves. Fry until the onions turn golden brown.
7. Finish the Curry:
Pour the hot tadka over the fish curry. Cover the pot immediately and let the flavors infuse.
Your flavorful Mangalore-style river fish curry is ready! Serve hot with steamed rice and enjoy.
