Fort Bessoncourt was erected after France lost the Alsace-Lorraine to prohibit German troops from penetrating France further from the roads of Colmar and Basel and the railway of Mulhouse, and to cover the forts of Roppe and Vézelois. It is a large fort of limestone masonry, pentagonal plan, designed for about 650 men and thirty pieces of artillery. It is a great representation of the forts of the 1880s.
