Producers that are growing blackberries commercially do things a little different than the home gardener. Typically, when the berries have run their course, growers (like myself) prune out the old canes. But Commercial Growers can't afford the huge amount of labor that it would take to prune the dead canes on acres of blackberries (or raspberries). Instead, they'll mow down every OTHER row of berries, which performs the "pruning out the old canes" function, with much less labor.
In this experiment, I'm trying to copy the techniques used by the "big boys". This video will give you a look at the drastic pruning, and will show what they look like a month later... and you'll want to see THAT !
This year I'm sacrificing ONE of my blackberry rows, to see what effect mowing them down will have on my production. The row I'm mowing is a Primacane variety. I'll show you how I mow it down, and will also show you what they look like ONE MONTH LATER.
It will be interesting to see if they produce berries next spring, or wait till summer and produce a fall crop... or neither...
Take care,
alan
