A special thanks to Dr Minh Le MD. She is completing training in Internal Medicine here in Orlando Florida. She prepared this information to educate her colleagues and graciously allowed me to share it here with you. Cancer Anorexia-Cachexia Syndrome is a complex process that interweaves across the process of the cancer, medications, appetite, taste and affects a patient's strength. This affects the patents strength of emotion, mental well being, spirituality as well as their muscle strength, and physical reserve. For some, it may result in the patient being taken off of their aggressive treatments for the cancer as the toxicity from the chemotherapy coupled with the unavoidable progression of decline from anorexia cachexia syndrome can lead to a bad situation becoming even worse. Many Oncologists do not want to contribute to the patients burdens and will advise to decrease or even withhold further attack on a malignancy when those efforts are also attacking the patient.
The patient, family and medical team need to be supportive to the patient who is fighting bravely every day. Family members may inadvertently say hurtful things in their frustration with the weight loss, increasing weakness and progressive fatigue that is part of this process. Patients and their loved ones can be upset about the poor appetite, taste perversion and early sense of fullness that often accompanies the increase metabolic rate that comes with this syndrome. Mealtime should be funtime, not battle time. Love, support acceptance of the patients abilities, choices and understanding that this is their journey.
