Before Eve, there was Lilith, the woman who refused to obey.
Long before the Bible, the people of Mesopotamia feared the lilītu, night spirits blamed for storms, sickness, and the deaths of newborns.
When the Hebrew Bible was written, one of these spirits slipped through. Lilit, mentioned just once in Isaiah. Maybe a demon, maybe just an owl. That single word became the seed of a legend.
Centuries later, rabbis wrote that Lilith was a winged night demon with flowing hair, dangerous to men in their sleep and to children in the dark. Families hung amulets carved with angel names to keep her away.
Then came the tale that made her immortal, told in the Alphabet of Ben Sira.
God made Adam and Lilith from the same dust. But when Adam demanded she submit, Lilith said, “We are equal.” She spoke God’s name and fled Eden. At the Red Sea, she gave birth to hundreds of spirit children.
Three angels were sent to bring her back, but Lilith refused. Her defiance became her curse, and her legend was born.
In Kabbalah, she became the Queen of Demons, the partner of Samael, the dark reflection of the divine.
Later, poets and painters turned her into something new, a symbol of rebellion, beauty, and forbidden power.
Lilith, the first woman who said no.
