US-Israeli Strikes on Iranian infrastructure have intensified fears of wider political and environmental consequences as the conflict escalates. Oil facilities, refineries and water infrastructure have reportedly been targeted across the country.
Foad Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran’s Faculty of World Studies, told Al Jazeera that the United States and Israel are attempting to destabilise Iran and potentially divide the country.
He pointed to comments by Donald Trump suggesting Iran’s map may change, arguing this indicates plans to “Balkanise” the country and separate oil-rich regions along the Persian Gulf.
Izadi said such a strategy would require weakening Iran’s leadership and political system to create internal collapse.
He added that many Iranians blame the United States and Israel for the attacks rather than their own government.
Izadi also said more than 1,400 civilians have reportedly been killed since the strikes began.
He warned attacks on oil facilities ahead of rainfall could spread pollution through contaminated rain.
According to Izadi, this could pollute dams and drinking water supplies and potentially trigger a serious environmental disaster if the strikes continue.
