How to prepare for singing a live performance of RAYE’s Where is My Husband - vocal coach tips

Here are 4 things that I did to prepare to perform this at my singing student karaoke night last weekend.

1️⃣ Pray. I’’m kidding (or am I?)

2️⃣ Practice the lyrics and lines that I was getting tongue tied on over and over and over everywhere until I was sick of it. And then some more.

3️⃣ Rehearse while elevating my heart rate. I was doing jumping jacks and jogging on the spot to ensure that my heart rate was high and that it was impacting my ability to breathe.

Why put myself through that?

Because I know that’s what it’ll feel like when the adrenaline is surging through me on stage/in front of an audience.

This helps me to adapt, become familiar singing with these sensations and build confidence under these circumstances.

4️⃣ Get my head straight/lower my expectations.

The worst thing you can do ahead of a performance (or an audition of that matter) is to have the expectations that you’ll sing it perfectly.

Putting pressure on yourself to sing it exactly the way you do when you’re in a singing lesson or practicing at home is unfair and unrealistic.

Even with loads of preparation, your nervous system is likely going to up the ante on you and make it more challenging to execute. Take this into consideration and lower your expectations.

And practice being kind to yourself when mistakes inevitably happen.
