This hike begins near the Hanskühnenburg in the Harz National Park and slowly descends towards the small town of Lonau. In higher elevations, the once-dominant spruce forests have largely vanished, a consequence of climate change.
Lower mountain slopes, however, are still shaped by natural beech forests, which remain largely intact and feel like a different world entirely.
