But their involvement in the beer brewing industry has declined ever since the beginning of the 16th century. Women have been brewing beer since the beginning of civilizations, mostly because they possessed far superior fermentation and brewing capabilities than men. This led them to start independent business to make money on the side as housewives; sometime partnering with their husbands in the 15th and 16th centuries. Eventually, gender inequality took place and a social taboo associated with these women. Since their beer selling fashion resembles witches, they were sometimes falsely accused of performing witchcraft. Primarily because of the reformation in Europe at that time. They would face prosecutions or even death sentence, if found guilty of being a witch. With this debacle of witch hunts and witchcraft trial, the women beer business declined and vanished all together by the end of the 16th century.
