The quick spread of the hospital fire in Taiwan’s New Taipei City was linked to the usage of PU foam mattresses inside the ward, noted the local fire department chief Monday, after an army of firefighters finally brought the fire under control.
The massive fire, which broke out early Monday has so far killed nine people and injured 15. Of the 15 injured, 11 have severe injuries, while the rest suffered minor injuries.
Local police and fire experts at the scene linked the cause of death to asphyxiation, however the main cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The fire department dispatched a total of 76 fire trucks and over 200 firefighters to the hospital, and eventually contained the fire just before 05:30.
Based on preliminary investigation, the fire broke out on the hospital’s seventh floor. There were more than 30 patients, three nursing staff and eight foreign labor service staff present in the ward at the time of the accident.
Since most of these patients were in the hospital’s critical care unit, they couldn’t respond promptly when the fire broke out. The fire also caused power outage, as a result the breathing machines stopped working.
Sixteen patients were found with zero pulse at the time of rescue. All those in critical condition were immediately sent to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
As to the cause of the fire, hospital staff said it could be due to the electrical wires and other equipment stored inside.
