Australia is a country located in the Southern Hemisphere, between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is the smallest continent and the sixth largest country in the world by area. Australia is a federation of six states and ten territories. The capital is Canberra, located in the southeast between the larger and more important economic and cultural centres of Sydney and Melbourne.

The history of Australia begins with the arrival of the Aboriginal peoples thousands of years ago. The first Europeans to arrive were the Dutch in the 17th century. The British followed in the 18th century and established the first penal colony in New South Wales in 1788. Australia became a self-governing dominion in 1901 and a fully independent country in 1942.

The geography of Australia is diverse, with deserts, mountains, forests, and rivers. The climate is also varied, ranging from hot deserts to temperate rainforests.

The politics of Australia are based on a parliamentary system. The head of state is the Queen of Australia, who is represented by the Governor-General. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who is the leader of the party that has the most seats in the House of Representatives.
