Where does the expression “money” come from? What is the meaning of “silver” and “gold” in the Bible? How can we define the use of money in the physical world, and in spirituality? What does money “cover” in spirituality?
Money has a spiritual root. Money is an expression of the force necessary to fulfill my desires.
There can be egoistic desires—the desires we are all born with, the desires relating to myself, but there can also be altruistic desires when I receive for the sake of someone else, and these are already spiritual desires. Money is the expression of that force.
In fact, the only thing that exists in reality is a force we call ""light,"" and opposite to it the vessel, meaning there is a force that wants to give all the good, and a vessel that wants to receive all that good. And money is the thing that connects these two opposing forces.
Basically, we have a desire, how much I want to be fulfilled, and I need a screen (Heb. ""Masach""), which I need if I want to receive anything from the Creator. But if I receive from the Creator directly, without this payment, then I feel shame.
This Masach allows me to be in a relationship with the emanation of the Creator, with the upper light, which is the sense of fulfillment.
Masach (screen) in Aramaic is ""Kisufa"" (""cover""), and it is also ""Kesef"" (""money"") in Hebrew. This way we can see the exact spiritual root of the expression “money.”
Examining the words further we see that “silver” is “Kesef” and it is the “screen.” In spirituality, this also relates to the correct form of intention, the correct form of reception through the right intention that allows me to fulfill some of my desires with some of the light, as with the right intention I can return the favor—receiving in order to bestow back contentment to the Creator through my reception. I can establish a relationship with Him through the screen/intention.
Thus ""silver"" (also ""Kesef"") is the quality of Bina, the quality of bestowal, Atzilut, generosity, by covering my desires.
“Gold” on the other hand, ""Zahav"" in Hebrew, comes from the expression ""Ze’Hav"" (give this). Thus “gold” is associated with reception, Malchut, Assiya, greed, etc.
In the old scriptures, there is always a very clear delineation between vessels, utensils in the Temple that are made of silver, and the ones that are made of gold. And when the forefathers bought something, they paid with silver shekels, as that represents their degree in spirituality, representing the screen they had.
This is where the relationship with money comes from. From the moment the vessel was created—even before the breaking of the vessels and the appearance of the worlds, before Adam HaRishon and the breaking of the souls, and before the Big Bang and our world—we have this spiritual root, which later became “money” and the need to pay in order to receive anything.
Thus money represents my ability to work with my egoism, either for its benefit or against it.
So we can use it egotistically in this world, paying to fulfill our selfish desires and paying in exchange for goods and services. Money in corporeality can “cover” the check I use to pay.
The price I pay determines how much I receive for myself while detaching from others and creating separation between us with the very act of paying for selfish fulfillment.
On the other hand, in spirituality, money can symbolize my “screen”, my spiritual covering force that allows me to cover my desires, while I am relating to others altruistically, in bestowal, support, and a good attitude. The price I pay is equal to the extent of the unity that is created by stepping onto my egoistic desires.
Thus the ``same money” has two opposite uses.
