7 PLACES WHERE IT IS STILL ILLEGAL TO SMOKE POT IN COLORADO

Colorado law permits adults aged 21 and older to buy or possess up to one ounce of marijuana for their personal use. However, using or possessing marijuana – even medical marijuana prescribed by a licensed physician – remains a federal crime under 21 U.S.C. 811.

Marijuana possession is always prohibited on federal lands, including the following seven locations:

1. National monuments, forests, and parks (such as the Rocky Mountain National Park and the Mesa Verde National Park),
2. Post offices,
3. Courthouses,
4. Airports (including the Denver International Airport, the City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, and Aspen-Pitkin County Airport),
5. Federal housing,
6. Veterans Administration buildings (including VA hospitals and health clinics), and
7. Private facilities located on federal land (such as ski runs).

Penalties for a first offense for possession of marijuana on federal land can include:

• Up to 1 year in jail, and
• A fine of up to $1,000 for the first offense.

Subsequent offenses carry longer maximum sentences and fines.
