The German Monarchical Restoration (1933–1950)

The rise of Adolf to power in Germany in 1933 marked the beginning of a unique era in European history. Although his political career developed within the National Socialist Party, Adolf never fully embraced the extremist ideology that supported him. To him, the party was merely an instrument: a platform to capture the attention of the masses and channel popular discontent against the Treaty of Versailles.

Shortly after becoming Chancellor, Adolf gradually distanced himself from the party’s more radical rhetoric. Anti-Semitism, though still present in his policies, was limited to expropriation of property and the promotion of forced emigration, without adopting a genocidal course. This process provided the German state with initial financial resources to stabilize its fragile economy and enabled the implementation of major public works projects, which drastically reduced unemployment.

The most decisive step, however, came in 1936, when Adolf promoted the restoration of the monarchy. Wilhelm II, exiled since 1918, returned as a constitutional emperor. His role was essentially symbolic, yet his prestige gave the new political order an aura of historical continuity. Adolf, as Chancellor, became the true head of government, always formally maintaining respect for the monarch and seeking his counsel.

Foreign policy during this period was dominated by the revision of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany reoccupied the Rhineland, reincorporated Austria, and reclaimed Alsace-Lorraine. The Polish question generated tensions and brief clashes, but not a war of global proportions. Without extensive colonial ambitions, Germany managed to maintain relatively stable relations with Britain and France, who preferred limited concessions over the risk of another large-scale conflict.

The global impact of this trajectory was profound. Without the systematic persecution and extermination of minorities, the Holocaust never occurred, and consequently, the Middle East was not reshaped around the creation of Israel in the same way. The Soviet Union, not confronted by a devastating war, remained more contained within its sphere of influence.

By the late 1940s, Germany had once again become a European great power — a constitutional monarchy that combined imperial tradition with nationalist modernization. In historical memory, Adolf remained an ambiguous figure: remembered as the architect of Germany’s restoration and the revision of Versailles, yet criticized for his authoritarianism, political manipulation, and suppression of opponents.
