Confession time...
This is perhaps the song I struggle to "live out" the most. Just a few days ago, I quoted nearly the entire song as part of a desperate prayer to quiet the chaos in my head!

I'm not very analytical at all. You know those people who have nice, neat little thought-boxes in their head who enjoy piecing life together like a giant Tetris game, one block nicely fitting into the next. Yeah, they amaze me. I marvel at the ability to process thoughts a good distance from emotion. Just wow.

Me? With some regularity (and more so recently), my thoughts seem similar to the homemade "Pinterest" cake I watched in a recent video -- from the oven window, an unsettled, bubbly, overflowing mess. Throw hormones into the mix and it's all over, folks. Oh, let my heart be quiet!!!

This, friends, is why I must regularly run (sprint, actually!) back to God's Word for my stability. I long to be like that stable, always-fruit-bearing "tree planted by the rivers of water" in Psalm 1. After all, God's Word still holds true for those of us who are veeerryy in tune with our emotions. Praise be!

So the story behind "Let My Heart Be Quiet"...
As my song-writing journey was just beginning to take off way back in 2006, it didn't take long for my passion for it to enflame. Everywhere I looked, there was a new thought for a new song! (And I had no idea I was that driven inside!) This new adventure had just begun and it became hard to turn off those creative sparks, leaving them alone to pick up later. And, well, since a quiet mind is what I needed most I began a song on that very topic!

Lord, let my heart be quiet, command my thoughts to still
And capture my attention to Your will.
Of all the thousand voices round that clamor in my ear,
Let it be Your voice, the voice that I can hear.

Lord, let my heart be quiet, let all distraction cease;
Make room within my heart for perfect peace.
When matters of this earthly life have filled my heart with noise,
Then, Lord, I need to listen to Your voice.

Lord, let my heart be quiet and ready to receive
Eternal words of truth You have decreed;
And let me learn to linger in quiet times of prayer.
Unhurried, let me often meet You there.

Oh, let my heart be quiet; my restless mind subdue.
Let all my expectation come from You.
And daily help me choose to let my inward man be still
So that Your voice my quiet mind can fill.

If my memory serves me, I believe these lyrics were written even BEFORE I owned a cell phone (we're usually slightly behind the technology curve :D). Distractions have only multiplied since. At the time, I had no idea how universal this message would be -- how well it would connect with believers in the 21st century. Enter a worldwide pandemic and political unrest and we need to pray this more than ever!
