There’s something about the stillness of a cloudy morning and the quiet strength of a dancer in motion.
In this Why It Works video, I’m breaking down a monochromatic color image captured on the beach just after sunrise. The dancer—dressed in soft greys with flowing chiffon—moves gracefully across the wet sand, her reflection trailing behind her. The tones, the texture, and the layered stillness of this frame are what make it feel cinematic.
Shot at 200mm with my 70–200mm lens, this image uses lens compression to flatten the background, pulling attention into the movement and the mood.
In this video, I’ll walk you through:
🩰 How monochromatic color palettes can add emotion and depth
📷 Why lens compression at 200mm creates a painterly, surreal backdrop
🌊 How to use reflections and texture to elevate minimalist compositions
As a Los Angeles dance photographer, I’m always chasing that balance between movement and stillness—between what’s happening in front of the lens and what’s felt beyond the frame. This image captures that perfectly.
🎥 Watch now to see how a foggy morning, simple styling, and thoughtful gear choice came together to create one of my favorite dance portraits.
