For those of you providing great ideas and helpful tips, I can share what happened as I was in a perfect position by the side of the thrower to see exactly what happened.

The grip for throwing is not huge and as he threw the wing it tilted upwards resulting in a throw at a very steep angle, over 45 degrees into the air. INAV Autolaunch was setup and then tried to recover but the wing stalled, tipped over and there wasn't enough height or thrust for Autolaunch to save it. Autolaunch is excellent (see how I set it up here) but can't recover from a situation like this.

No fault, no foul. We had a good laugh about it afterwards. It is just a shame that I never saw it fly...
